New Own-Goal By BN ! – Fresh Expose

New Own-Goal By BN ! – Fresh Expose

This post is also available in: Iban, Malay

"Significant prosperity", according to the State Secretary - on RM 15 a day?

BN bloggers have been boasting that the State Secretary, Mohamid Morshidi bin Abdul Ghani, got a letter into the UK’s Sunday Times newspaper claiming “the rainforest is not devastated” and that “logging licences are awarded after due process and are not in the personal gift of the Chief Minister”.

However, we can reveal Ghani’s own family are among the state’s top land-grabbers!  Not only that, they have been charged ridiculously preferential rates for the vast tracts of land, which they have been given (by the Chief Minister)!

Vested Interest of a top civil servant

Abdul Ghani is Sarawak’s top civil servant and should therefore remain strictly non-political.  However,  he is in fact known to be one of Taib’s closest allies and he leapt to his boss’s defence after a top Times journalist reported on Sarawak’s environmental catastrophes last week.

Echoing Taib’s own laughable claims, he announced that “70% of the country is under forest cover” (attempting to imply it was virgin jungle), a contention which has been dismissed as ludicrous by all respected international experts.

So it is all the more reprehensible that we discover that the State Secretary’s own brother, Mohamid Taufik Abdul Ghani, has walked away with over 14,000 hectares of plantation titles for the give away price of just RM 110,000!  No conflict of interest there?

“]

The 2008 Land Registry records - 9 large plots of land amounting to over 14,000 hectares in Similajau all went to Mohamid Taufik Abdul Ghani through the companies Derawan and Sahua Enterprise [hectares in 5th column and premium charged in 7th column

Even more outrageously for a person, who claims to ensure “due process”, the land records show that Mr Ghani has been given the full 60 years of the lease before he has to pay up on the money ! What amazing leniency from the State of Sarawak to the brother of the State Secretary and key political ally of Taib Mahmud!

“]
Most of the plots were offered for no payment. For the others he was given 60 years to pay it back – [2008 Land Registry records

We will be fascinated to hear Mr Abdul Ghani demonstrate fully in this case how "due process" was followed.  Also, how this land could not be seen as having been "in the personal gift of the Chief Minister, Abdul Taib Mahmud", given such a valuable asset was given effectively for free.  Perhaps he would care to do so in a follow-up letter to the Sunday Times?

The true value of these land titles has been proven

Our researches have shown the true value of the land that was handed to the State Secretary's brother, because the two companies concerned Derawan Sdn Bhd and Sahua Enterprise Sdn Bhd (which are shown in the Land Records for 2008 as being controlled out of the same office with the same telephone number as that of Mr Ghani) were sold soon after to a subsidiary of Sime Derby called Austral Enterprises.

Details of the two purchases, available on-line via Alacra Store. Derawan went for RM5.15 and Sahua went for RM10.44!

Austral Enterprises Sdn Bhd bought the two companies back in the 1990s for a total of RM 15.5 million.  The Ghanis had therefore managed to make RM 15 million on the land half a century before they have to pay the RM 110,000 they were charged for it by the State of Sarawak!

Note the same address and phone number for both companies, demonstrating the link with Mr Ghani

Sarawak Report would suggest that the ordinary citizens and voters of Sarawak are entitled to feel very angry and outraged indeed at such blatant theft from the state, master-minded through the Land and Survey Office, which is directly controlled by the Chief Minister, on behalf of the family of his top civil servant.

How very objective the civil service must be under such circumstances!

Contributing to Sarawak’s pollution and environmental degradation

The State Secretary’ obedient letter to the Sunday Times – echoing his ‘boss’ the Chief Minister

In his letter to the Sunday Times the State Secretary continues to opine that the growth of the palm oil industry is “nothing to be frightened of”.  In this way he dismisses the environmental impact.

However, it is relevant to point out that the very company that is linked to his family, Derawan Bhd Sdn, was last October fined RM 20,000 after pleading guilty to “discharging effluent into inland waters” from its mill.,

Plantation pollution is, of course, one of the worst environmental problems faced by the people of Sarawak, who have found their drinking water contaminated and fish killed by the chemical effluents and mud erosion.  Yet Mr Ghani’s parting point in this letter to the Sunday Times, that:

“the growth of this industry will not affect the indigenous peoples and will bring the country significant prosperity”

smugly ignores these dreadful problems, along with the near starvation caused to so many tribespeople by the loss of their lands to this vast agro-business in which is family is engaged.

Who profits?

So once again BN’s top cheerleaders stand condemned by their own preposterous remarks.  As everyone can now perfectly well see, the “significant prosperity” to which the State Secretary refers has not come to the ordinary people receiving RM 15 a day working on palm plantations, but to himself and his family – starting with the RM 15 million that was made selling on the land titles, which Taib Mahmud kindly handed to them!

So much for pompous pronouncements about “due process”!

is DAP any different? are the opposition really any different?!

i figure it would just come down to what is an acceptable level of corruption to sarawak? to you as an individual?

i say this because corruption is so imbedded in our society its not just going to change overnight with a new government or new leadership. its never going to change at all! corruption begins when we as kids first learn that we can get away with so many things for what? for convienience of life? when was your first bribe to a police for some traffic offence? i'm sure alot of people started there.

i have accepted that this is our sad reality, just what is an acceptable level for yourself. think about it.

        • lkl

Is the Opposition better? That's a question I often heard asked. For all we know they are probably as bad as BN but we should try to be fair; BN has squandered the country for 50 years, let other people have their share. It's also not fair to 'accuse' the opposition of being capable of corruption before they even has a chance to rule.

        • dumb kong

When you have a management team who has been habitually stealling tons of money from your assests, would you still want to employ that team? Yes, I use "EMPLOY", because that is what a government is, "employed by the people to manage the country!" This is the essence of a democracy as compared to the feudalistic region. Sadly, many of our rural folks in Sarawak are still in the feudalistic mentality of fearing the "government". I say we must change the team, and any unproven team is worth a try. Better a new team then a proven team of thieves! Only blind, ignorant or intimidated stake-holders would still insist on employing a proven team of thieves.

          Please read about DAP governance in Penang….google Lim Guan Eng, DAp Penang…read about the HUGE difference DAP has made since it took over Penang from BN…..all the main media, controlled by the BN, will not print anything about the good things DAP has done;

so please don't try to brush off the corruption and swindles and embezzlement by Taib, his Ministers , top Civil Servants and cronies

if the Opposition takes over in Sarawak, the prople will demand that these crooks be brought to justice

maybe sentence them (pick pocket)to a nudist colony, get it?

        • John Hardick

Very stupid of you to ask when BN is rotten. I want to call you asn ass.

If you don't try, how would you know? BN is bad and it does not matter others are bad too.

      SARAWAK ELECTION IS COMING

While walking down the street one day a Minister of the ‘Semua Boleh Land’ is tragically hit by a truck and killed. His soul arrives in heaven and is met by an angel at the entrance. "Welcome to heaven," says the angel. "Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we're not sure what to do with you."

"No problem, just let me in," says the man. "Well, I'd like to, but I have orders from higher up. What we'll do is have you spend one day in hell and one in heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity."

"Really, I've made up my mind. I want to be in heaven," says the minister. "I'm sorry, but we have our rules." And with that, the angel escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell. The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a green golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him. (Not a big surprise that they are all in Hell…lmao)

Everyone is very happy and in their nice expensive batik and silk dress. They run to greet him, shake his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at the expense of the poor ‘rakyat’. They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster, caviar and champagne.

Also present is the Devil, who really is a very friendly guy who has a good time dancing and telling jokes. They are having such a good time that before he realizes it, it is time to go. Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and waves while the elevator rises…The elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens on heaven where the angel is waiting for him.

"Now it's time to visit heaven."

So, 24 hours pass with the minister joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and, before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by and the angel returns.

"Well, then, you've spent a day in hell and another in heaven. Now choose your eternity". The minister reflects for a minute, then he answers: "Well, I would never have said it before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in hell". So, the angel escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell. Now, the doors of the elevator open and he's in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage.

He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags as more trash falls from above. The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulder. "I don't understand," stammers the minister. "Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and caviar, drank champagne, and danced and had a great time. Now there's just a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable. What happened?"

The devil looks at him, smiles and says, "Yesterday we were campaigning…..just like you did in the old days. Today you voted."

So my fellow Sarawakian, please vote wisely for if you don’t, you’d be live in hell for eternity!

Nearly 200 people remain in custody in London after violent riots erupted during a huge anti-austerity protest on Saturday.

Up to 500,000 protesters converged on the centre of the capital to protest against cost-cutting measures brought in by prime minister David Cameron's Conservative government.

A breakaway group of 300 anarchists caused havoc in the city's exclusive West End, smashing into banks, throwing fire bombs and paint at shops, and setting off missiles in Trafalgar Square until the early hours of the morning.

A total of 201 people were arrested and 84 were injured, including 31 police officers.

The main protest was the biggest union-organised rally in London's post-war history, with teachers, students and nurses marching to Hyde Park to tell the Government its deficit reduction plan was too savage.

But business secretary Vince Cable says the government is unmoved.

"No government would change its fundamental economic policies simply in response to a demonstration of that kind," he said.

PLEASE SORT OUT SH!T IN YOUR OWN COUNTRY FIRST.

The Brits are much fairer (skin and heart) to Sarawakians than those devils UMNO especially TAIK.

It's moron like you that is reponsible for letting their blatant wholesale theft of resources and land. If we all sit back & think like you, no change will happen. Not only are you a pathetic moron, you don't deserve any right to stop others wanting to do something about what is happenin in Sarawak!!!

    • http://none Watch Dog

It's a clown and pea brain like you that supports your Thief master. You are getting the NCR land for plantation and employed slaves..ie.RM15.00 per day while palm oil is at RM3,500

      per metric tonne.

Poverty level RM720.00 per month ,the pay earned by the 'slave workers' at RM450 per month considering that they do NOT rest, working full 30 days..earning RM450.00.

So Mr Pea Brain how much are you paid by your Thief Master..UK is not relevant to Sarawak, you are just trying ti divert attention.

The State Secretary is making a meal out of himself.Morshidi do you know that RM15 per day is STG3( Three British pound) laughable. Why do you write to THE TIMES of UK,New York Times has been informed too about power abuse by your fellow 'brother'. Who is going to believe you now.

"WHEN YOU ARE DROWNING YOU HOLD ON TO THE LAST STRAW"

      • Cabul

OMG!, RM 15 is only less than 3 pounds. This is a blatant slavery man! Even worse, the net income will only be RM 8.50 per day after deduction of their SOCSO an EPF. OMG!

Brit democracy system are very transparent. Their leaders are capable and competent even though they are not perfect.

But in sarawak, our system is corrupt at the highest order. So sort out your own brain D'oh if you have any.

    • Teaser

The anarchist in Britain can do that because they can. Now, can you do that here? Maybe you can but the majority of us can't because we are too pre-occupied with scavenging for our next meal which is getting more difficult. We can't servive eating Oil Palm seed but thats the only food availble for miles! So don't compare us with people who can! And don't just paste…put forward your opinion if you can.

    • Rude

You so desperate you have to resort to this sort of thing ? You are like your boss , pathetic impotent little man . Your time will come also , like all the others . I predict Sarawak economy will boom soon with big construction contracts. We will be building many jails to lock up cockroaches like you . At the end of the day people like you are just parasites, blood suckers. You have lived last 30 years by stealing and corruption from your own people. It doesn't get any lower than that. You just scum and scum gets flushed down toilet.

    • D'oh

You idiots are all the same. Always flogging the same dead horse…

Taught how to read, and you feed yourself with trash and rubbish. No matter how smart you get, it's pointless because you keep jumping at the wrong conclusions…fed by some smarmy, conniving foreign political interests. Who's minds are colonized? I think yours.

Did you read the news report carefully? Who do you think caused the UK's disastrous economic decline? No other than the ex-Chancellor of the Exchequer and ex-PM Gordon Brown himself.

Clare uses you sheeps to wag the British dog, and you happily cheer her on. Grow up and acquire extra brain cells yourselves. Chuckle…

      • Proud Sarawakian

The joke is on you D'oh.

If Obama or Clinton speaks out against the corrupt Malaysian leaders, will you then go find negative news about the US to discredit them and the country they lead? True leaders aren't afraid of criticism, accusations, and even threats because they have higher principles, some level of decency and kindness towards fellow citizens not only of their on kind but towards the entire human race. At the end of the day, they can stand in front of a mirror and say "I have done nothing shameful today".

And yes, they are not perfect, but they have self-respect and understand responsibilities and shame. They also understand when to say sorry and step down.

Just because Sarawakians have not been vocal in the past does not mean we are weak. Don't mistake our patience for weakness.

If you have counter-arguments backed by evidence, why not enlighten us since you claim yourself to be of higher intelligence? Convince us like SR has been doing since months ago. Don't just type angry words and call everyone stupid … else you just make yourself look like a clown.

        • D'oh

Would you believe me if I told you that Sarawak Report is spreading much more lies than truths?

I'm convinced that, by the sound of your comment you would give me a staunch 'no'…so why would I bother trying to change your mind? It's your right.

Ask yourself how did you come to that conclusion and did you at least attempt to objectively weigh both sides of the arguments over time in order to arrive at a more objective conclusion?

You seem to be ever so ready to complement and praise western leaders and spit on the name of our own leaders. You forget that at this very moment President Obama alongside his British and French counterparts are appallingly engaged in opening up another theater of war in Libya, bombing civilians in the name of their safety. Ever wonder how is it that problems that have been festering are left to fester and those which didn't need further escalation are given exactly that: escalation.

And here we have another western agent trying to convince us to go the way of Libya or even London and organize mass protests with the expectation that our government would have to quell it in the name of general peace. Once this takes place, a 21st century Kermit Roosevelt would soon emerge to plunge this country further into an abyss which would soon need 'rescuing' by powers uneasy upon regarding our stability from the lens of their own crumbling societal fabric. And so, they would give no quarter when fabricating tales to induce us in behaving in the manner that only the worst of their society is expected to behave.

According to British Business Secretary Vince Cable, '“No government would change its fundamental economic policies simply in response to a demonstration of that kind,” he said.'

And you said that the British government is all that much more noble? Please enrich your understanding further or continue to be shepherded about like the rest of these sheeps.

        • Proud Sarawakian

wow, you are quite something. Born and raised in Sarawak, i can speak from my own experience! then, studied and worked overseas, i saw a disturbing & stark difference between malaysia and both western & eastern countries.

true governments of the people (Japanese, French, British, Singaporean, etc.) care to explain to their respective people when some doubts were raised. ours? forget about it.

no need to agree with me, why don't you go visit the victims in the pendalaman yourself? determine for yourself if SR reports warrant any credibility?

your pathetically weak attempt to quote “No government would change its fundamental economic policies simply in response to a demonstration of that kind” is so far out of context for Sarawak. advise your bosses, if they use more violence and crimes going forward, sarawakians will do the Egyptian Walk.

Or there is no truths in pictures of penan, ibans and other natives doing blockages in the jungles and Oil palm Plantations? How about documents displayed in SR as proof of wrongdoings by your master YBs? Are these not evidence of truths or they are too fuzzy like one "documentary" sex video lately, to be taken seriously? Over a period of time it could also affect river-mouth and shoreline marine life and become 'dead zones' (Shanghai shipping areas).

This is nature's 'due process' as a reaction to human's mindless and callous actions, without thinking of long-term ecological effects but more concern over yield per acre which translates to 'more money for me in the bank'. That's their bottom-line exposed at the expense of cheap labor, outrageously low land cost and untold ecological damage by chemicals.

The day will come when your rivers and streams will become dead zones or "the silent spring" (R. Cussons). At what price 'development'?

Vote for change. Vote PR (Pakatan Rakyat).

  • Change We Must

The entire gang is corrupt to the core.

Taufik Gani, the state secretary's brother, is married to Hadiah who is sister to Karim Hamzah, Taib's chief political secretary. Karim had been shouting himself hoarse defending Taib Mahmud's corrupt ways.

Taufik also works for Bustari Yusuf, elder brother of Fadillah Yusuf, deputy federal minister. They also defend Taib. Bustari is reportedly close to Najib and Rosmah.

And, by the way, the previous state secretary, Wilson Baya Dandot, now CEO of SCORE, also received 8000 acres of plantation land in Baram under his wife's name, Theresa Toyat, who runs a laundry service in Kuching and who had no bloody experience in plantation.

When the entire set up is corrupt from the top down, the only way to change it is to remove the entire BN gang out this coming election.

I think you had better check your own facts carefully. It says that the lease is 60 years which is normal for Provisional Lease issued for Oil Palm Plantations. No where does it say that they are given that amount of time to pay the premium. Obviously your command of Bahasa Malaysia is rather poor.

On the other hand, your records in the Land Grab Data section doesn't even show the same name. It says En. Muhamad Firdaus Shamsudi. Did you doctor the documents just to smear & tarnish people's reputation. Please clarify the descrepancies.

But it is clear though that U have clearly benefited from a western style education. unlike u ah…don't know what to call u lah…brother?mina?…what ever lah….there are alot of Penan girls, Sarawakian children who have not been as lucky as U…they don't have a school to go to…no shoes to wear…no water to brush their teeth….therefore before u spend anymore time condemning western people…it is best u get on your BMX and 'berambus' from here as there is SOO MUCH TO DO BUT OHH SO LITTLE TIME……

Can you fact find about Swinburne ??

eg the car par ticket management

and also the loans given to students from YAYASAN SARAWAK ..

YAYASAN gives loans to students so that the money goes to pay the construction of building blocks in SWINBURNE which is built on CMS cements ….I think SWINBURNE fees is quite high comparable to other private college … now comes about the parking tickets …

In HOKKIEN, there is a quote saying 'sen pau iya' means 'he 'plays must win' . All the money goes round round but finally into his pockets

KUCHING CAR PARK MANAGEMENT SYSTEM – their parking attendants are quite hardworking nowadays .. do you know that their works is a risk for Skin Cancer … With the road full of bumps because of the on-going sewage improvement + car park tickets, how do you think living in Kuching ?? and now even the price of staple foods goes up …

The poor becomes poorer because of the system. The rich becomes richer because of the system. And the worst part, the richer group DOES NOT SPEND MONEY into the system but circulate it around the rich or bring to overseas for their vacation. Go and eat in some local kopitiam kah , hawker stalls, buy some things in old shops kah, etc etc

    • aborium

The public now has to cope with increasing costs of living, of educating their children, and having to fork out extra for parking fees in a campus area would further burden an already overstretched budget. This is why private universities can never be run purely on financial gains model alone. They also have their societal roles and obligations.

As chief of Civil Service, he should first protect the integrity of the civil service by declaring his non-partisan role as SS in what essentially is a political issue. That way he protects his staff and establishment.

Either he is a servant to politicians (who come and go) or to the people who (pays his monthly salary and perks) expects him to protect them from 'em politico-rm bandits from encroaching into their lands. Either he tames the bandits or the bandits tame him. You and I know where he's at.

Kpd org2 M'sia, org Sarawak khususnya: I'm not highly educated, so 4give my English & B.M. After reading all about Sarawak's stories from both sides, the govt(sarawak & Federal govt) and the opposition, n also having talks with lots of people frm all walks of life over the yrs, I find dat both hv good points, but the GIST of the story/issue here s to hv clean, morally good, n trustworthy leaders. Normal law-abiding Citizens/voters & the Oppositions seems to match with each other as far as current issues r concerned, esp with regards to 'fairplay' on many issues, about lands, opportunities, Taib's monopoly and what not for example. Their onslaught towards the govt are relentless and the govt are just defensive and sometimes helpless bcos of the truth that they are fighting for. If what Ive read are all true, then I strongly believe Taib's regime is doomed. Nothing,no one, not even all the Powerful leaders all over the world combined together can help Taib's regime to win the coming Sarawak election!!! Sarawak people, please look at what Peanng state has achieved:

In a short period of two years, Penang state (Pakatan Rakyat led by DAP) is the ONLY state in the history of Malaysia since 1957 to receive a praise, in 2009, from Transparency International:

    (http://www.transparency.org/news_room/in_focus/2009/gcr2009),(See page 272: download [page 247-304])

How does corruption affect people's lives?

Around the globe, corruption impacts people's lives in a multitude of ways. In the worst cases, corruption costs lives. In countless other cases, it costs their freedom, health, or money. It has dire global consequences, trapping millions in poverty and misery, while breeding social, economic and political unrest. Corruption is both a cause of poverty, and a barrier to overcoming it.

Sarawakians, this State Election may be your last chance to vote out the corrupt leaders. Vote wisely otherwise, you will be forever under the grip of the ungrateful bunch of politicians. Give change a chance.

To all Sarawak people/voters, pls read this carefully: After reading so much reports from all sides of the contending parties and about the whole systems and the going-ons here in Malaysia, its vry clear dat we are heading for a DISASTER!! For goodness sake, pls come to your senses and VOTE them OUT!!..these people think they are gonna stay here forever!, they are not godfearing, they simply do what they like to amass wealth, abuse power, then they lie and keeps on lying. They talk n talk about developments, of course the rakyat deserves it simply bcos its the rakyat's money in the first place!! It does not beong to the Taibs, Najibs or the BN! But whenever there is the so called development, guess who gets the contract? See? And now they are pledging this and that project, give RM here n there and even handing out beers! OMG!!!this is really a bloody corrupted society/leaders! Sarawakians, you are answerable to your future generations for not correcting things while you can, this will all go down in history! Work doubly hard, go tell the truth to the people who are easily swayed by some cheap 'candies' esp the elders in the remote areas. Dont be scared by the intimidators, where are your so called warriors to counter them? Common, the whole of Malaysia are putting on hope on Sarawak, turn the tidal-wave, you'll create history if you win, meaning if you win, the Federal govt will also be changed! I'm sure you all want that…Sarawak will be the saviour, justice will be served to the criminals, crooks, rapist, hoarders, grabbers; judicial, the police, immigrations, MACC/SPRM, etc will be revamped/overhauled and put to normal/clean/better systems; opportunities, health, educations and the country's wealth will be distributed equally/fairly. Its NOW or NEVER!!! Just do it, put the evils where they belong…to JAILS, solitary confinements, hard labour and do community works!! and you are a blessed people bcos you are leading us…to be a HAPPY MALAYSIANS!!!!!!!!
