UK’s Ofcom Launches Investigation

UK’s Ofcom Launches Investigation

This post is also available in: Iban, Malay

The UK’s Independent Newspaper has taken a lead on the story

The UK media regulator, Ofcom, has now announced that it too will launch an investigation into the activities of FBC Media and its association with the Malaysian Government, Sarawak and other regimes with public profile problems.

The announcement comes at the same time as confirmation by the British Foreign Office that it has launched a money laundering investigation into Taib’s assets in the UK.

Ofcom not only has responsibility for BBC World, which has already just published its own report into the scandal, it also supervises the American owned stations CNBC and CNN’s activities in Europe, which are both deeply embroiled in questions surrounding FBC’s global news fixing scandal (see our previous coverage).

The UK’s Independent Newspaper has now taken a leading role in investigating the issue, which represents a level of corruption in the broadcast media on a parallel with the scandal surrounding phone hacking by certain print media.   Today they reported on the revelations about the US economist Jeffrey Sachs

Embarrasing – FBC’s ‘positive publicity’ for Taib and Najib has backfired as the UK press starts to take up the story about their illegal activities

The Independent has also revealed that FBC was making BBC programmes praising President Mubarak during the height of the ‘Arab Spring’ rebellion against him in Egypt.  The same programme took the opportunity to attack Malaysia’s PKR opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim as a supposed Muslim ‘extremist’ backing the popular revolt against the Egyptian dictator.

Both Mubarak and Najib have now of course been exposed as secret clients of FBC. Meanwhile, the deposed Mubarak’s vast assets of millions of dollars stolen from his people have now been frozen in bank accounts throughout the world.  The story was also taken up today by the UK’s biggest circulation newspaper the Daily Mail and also by the Guardian newspaper.

Proff Sachs praised Malaysia’s palm oil industry on Third Eye, but has now admitted to seeing dreadful evironmental degredation on his trip to Sarawak

In the United States the well regarded blog Politico has also taken up the matter, in what is likely to be just the start of wider coverage as questions are raised about the links between several US news stations and publications with FBC Media.

Yet, in a statement to Politico and in a letter to us a spokesperson for the US economist Jeffrey Sachs complained about ‘inaccuracies’ in Sarawak Report’s coverage of the matter.  Sarawak Report has asked for clarification on these ‘inaccuracies’, beyond the comment that taking his family on a paid for trip to Malaysia could not be described as a holiday:

“The visit to Sime Darby was not a family vacation in any way. During his trip to Sabah and Sarawak, Prof. Sachs saw considerable evidence of deforestation and environmental degradation and he raised those concerns with the company and Government, in order to help advance more sustainable agriculture in these fragile and crucial regions”[Erin Trowbridge, spokesman for Prof Sachs]

Sarawak Report would like an explanation for the contrast between this statement and Prof Sach’s remarks when interviewed by FBC media earlier this year for the BBC:

“The way that Malaysia, for example, developed palm oil with smallholders who were working in larger areas and often with government leadership…has been exemplary.”[Prof Sachs speaking on FBC-made Third Eye programme for BBC World in July]

 Britain to investigate Taib’s assets

Meanwhile, the UK has also joined the list of countries that has announced that it too will be examining the assets of Taib Mahmud in the light of concerns about the money laundering of the proceeds of political  corruption.

The move comes as three banks were last week fined in Switzerland for having helped conceal illegal assets by potentates who were deposed during the Arab spring, including FBC client Hosni Mubarak.

Reflecting a new spirit of tackling the problem of corrupt world leaders using Western banks and property portfolios to hide money stolen from their people, the UK Foreign Minister with responsibility for Malaysia, Jeremy Browne, signed a personal letter in response to a request from the Bruno Manser Foundation and Sarawak Report.

He confirmed that Taib’s UK assets will now be investigated, especially in the light of the MACC’s own investigation into the BN Chief Minister and also new agreements on cooperation on law and order between Britain and Malaysia:.

Letter from UK Minister Jeremy Browne confirming Taib is being investigated for money laundering

Sarawak Report will be reporting further on the UK’s investigation into Taib’s assets.  Britain joins Germany, Switzerland and Canada in indicating they will examine properties and investments held by the Chief Minister in their countries.

Taib has paid millions for PR.  However, money cannot buy reputation for long.

Yahoo! Job well done, SR! Finally, the beginning of the end of the most corrupted regime in the world. The light is now at the end of the tunnel…we’re FREE…finally :-)

  • Money Laundering 101

Something is wrong and unfair treatment by BN Umno to Askar Dayak Pencen that fought the Komunis(now turned BN Kapitalis).

Looks like many surrendered Komunis become capitalist, instant mega millionaire contractors developers and share their loots back with BN Umno as partners in Politic of Debolotment. Mostly given huge area of lands, housing projects, govt projects, hotels, business with crony BN partners with their companies.

That’s how cunning Taib and uncle ex TYT Pelandok Yaakub closing deal with the Komunis just to share back all the lootings debolotments later. And how easy Pelandok Yaakub FOOLED the Dayak Iban Sarawak Rangers wasted risked their lives fighting the Komunis only for the happily surrendered Komunis got rich in the end!

So what the Askar Dayak Pencen get? Pencen bulanan RM551.75 and work as shift guards at bank 10pm to 6am with gaji RM450.00 monthly all in total barely enough to make ends meet.

Worst still, most private security companies prefer to employ Askar Dayak Pencen not because they’re experienced but easy to sub-work(cheat!) their work. Eg.Private security companies charge clients (like banks) for security guard service at RM1,000 per guard but actually pay the Askar Dayak Pencen only RM450.00 so they make easy money RM550.00!

Now tell us lah which one make the most money:

BN UMNO Pelandok Yaakub Gang partner with the Komunis in Politik Debolotment? Or,

Askar Dayak Pencen cheated half salary by private security companies? Or,

A rich capitalist Bong Ki Chok swimming happily at BDC Stampark pool?

Sarawak’s Independence Through Malaysia: A Successful Integration

    Bernama 2007-09-17

While August 31, 1957 is the date where Malaysia proclaimed independence, Sept 16, 1963 is a more significant date for Sarawak as on that day the state gained independence through Malaysia.

Sarawak was initially under the Brunei Sultanate and in 1842 it came under the `White Rajah’ James Brooke and later his successors and finally it ended up as a British colony on July 1, 1946.

Sarawak’s participation in Malaysia, along with Singapore and Sabah, was initially viewed with scepticism and confronted by Indonesia.

Yet after 43 years, all assessment point to the fact it was the right decision that benefited Sarawak in every aspect.

The former governor Tun Abdul Rahman Yaakub when met at his residence told Bernama that Sarawak decided to join Malaysia because it shared the same aspirations like Malaya then.

“It was the right decision,” he said adding that the outcome was the better life and the freedom that the people in the state have been enjoying.

He noted that though Sarawak enjoys greater autonomy compared to the states in the peninsula, the state and the Federal Government have enjoyed cordial relations throughout that not only benefited Sarawakians but all in Malaysia.

SARAWAK IN BETTER FOOTING UNDER MALAYSIA

Abdul Rahman who was also the former chief minister exemplified the help extended by the Federal Government that enabled Sarawak to eliminate the communist threat in the state.

The Federal Government dispatched police and army platoons to communist hideouts in areas like Sri Aman (then known as Simanggang) and Sibu.

The communist threat that lasted for 11 years ended when the state’s communist chief Bong Kee Chok officially agreed to lay down arms on Oct 21, 1973 in Sri Aman, 290km from here.

Other than benefiting from the security viewpoint, Abdul Rahman pointed at the economic development enjoyed by Sarawak through the assistance of the Federal Government.

Abdul Rahman refuted the notion that Sarawak could have developed on its own like Brunei without participating in Malaysia.

He explained that while both Sarawak and Brunei were endowed with oil and gas, many fail to take into consideration that Brunei is a smaller country with a smaller population that made it easier to develop unlike Sarawak which is vast and its population scattered.

Despite this, Sarawak has made great strides in the last four decades in uplifting the livelihood of its people.

SARAWAK HAS SEEN MANY DEVELOPMENT UNDER MALAYSIA

Again Abdul Rahman emphasised that the development meant here shouldn’t be seen in the narrow context like how many roads and schools have been built. Instead it should be seen in a holistic manner like how far we have come in enhancing the competitiveness of the indigenous people, in unifying the different races and more importantly in maintaining the long-term stability.

Abdul Rahman, Sarawak’s third chief minister, took over from Datuk Tawi Sli in 1970. Sarawak’s first chief minister was Tan Sri Stephen Kalong Ningkan who led the state from Sept 16, 1963 to Jun 16, 1966.

Abdul Rahman was Sarawak’s fourth governor from March 31, 1981 to April 2, 1985 and has now fully devoted himself to Islam.

SARAWAK IN MALAYSIA A SUCCESSFUL FORMULA

A Sarawak historian, Dr Chang Pat Fot pointed out that Sarawak’s entry into Malaysia brought big success to the state especially in education and infrastructure.

Dr Chang who has vastly written on the state’s history said the Malaysia framework provided a better financial footing and accelerated the infrastructure development in education, security, telecommunication and others.

Sarawak today is far different than what it used to be before 1963. There were no proper roads connecting the different towns then and the people lived in the interiors and led simple lives.

“All that changed when Sarawak achieved independence through Malaysia. The road connecting Kuching and Sibu was opened in 1968 greatly improving communication over land and now there is a road that connects Kuching to Lawas,” he said.

More indigenous people today are literate and there are a number of intellectuals too and the once rural society today have transformed into city dwellers and are enjoying all the trappings of a modern live.

Since joining Malaysian, Dr Chang concluded that Sarawak is definitely better off.– BERNAMA

Ex-trackers, S’wak Rangers feel services unrecognised

by Churchill Edward, Borneo Post, March 25, 2010, Thursday

KUCHING: Many former Iban trackers and Sarawak Rangers feel that their services and sacrifices to the country have gone unrecognised.

Ops Ngerapuh Committee chairman Lt Col (Rtd) Robert Rizal Abdullah told The Borneo Post recently that some of the soldiers are surviving on meagre allowances from the Veterans Department.

“For the few who are still alive, can’t we appreciate what they had done? Give them some form of pensions or monetary aid or whatever you may want to call it. After all, they have very few years left to see the daylight on this planet.

“Let them be happy and in the knowledge that the services they had rendered to the nation are well remembered and appreciated,” he said.

Robert cited Unau Sauh (FF 1386), one of the last Iban trackers sent to Malaya in 1952 to help the Commonwealth Forces fight the Communist Insurgency, as one such soldier.

Unau was in the same platoon as the famous Corp Menggong Panggit, who was awarded a George Medal by England’s King George V for his feat in attacking a communist terrorist camp.

“His (Unau) British platoon commander was killed in the attack and he had to assume command of the platoon. Soon after his training in Port Dickson, he and his comrades were attached to a British Battalion and were involved in Search and Destroy operations to eliminate the communist terrorists in Johor, which included freeing the town of Labis from their clutches,” said Robert.

He said Unau went on to serve in Malaya for eight years before returning to Sarawak in 1959 after many encounters and battles.

Unable to simply watch the Communist Insurgency in Sarawak, he joined the police in 1972 as a border scout.

Similar to what he had done in Malaya, he also played a key role in helping infantry units in tracking down terrorists.

Finally on Dec 31, 1988, at the age of 55, he called it a day and retired after being on the front line for 25 years.

“Sad to say, he was not given any pension. It was a slap in the face — his sacrifices and services had not been recognised,” said Robert. “It defies logic that fighters like Unau are not eligible for a pension, even though they had given the prime of their life to the nation.”

The Iban Trackers were reformed into two experimental platoons of Sarawak Rangers (Malayan Unit) — to give them full military status – on Jan 1, 1953 where they continued to serve in the front line as trackers with the various Commonwealth Forces.

On March 31, 1960, the Sarawak Rangers (Malayan Unit) was disbanded and reformed into Sarawak Rangers (Far East Land Forces) to become part of the British Army.

Like the Gurkhas, they could be sent to any war anywhere in the world, however, on Sept 15, 1963, they were disbanded.

On Sept 16, 1963, in conjunction with Malaysia Day, they were reformed into the modern-day First Battalion Malaysian Rangers.

The Ops Ngerapuh Committee is working on realising the government’s efforts to bring home the remains of fallen Iban Trackers and Sarawak Rangers from West Malaysia and Singapore to Sarawak.
