Tight lipped – He once lapped up attention, but now the door is slammed shut
For the first time in 30 years Abdul Taib Mahmud has cancelled the traditional press conference, normally held at the Wisma Bapa Malaysia after the weekly Cabinet meeting.
Even more astonishing, the journalists were barred from the building, as if they were unwanted intruders.
It is often such small, but extremely strange signs, that make us aware of developments that are seismic behind the scenes. Like when a beach suddenly bares before a tsunami or there is rumbling before an earthquake.
So what has made Taib act so out of character? What pressure is he under that he and his ministers have suddenly decided they dare not face what has for so long been their ’lapdog’ press?
The inescapable conclusion is that the evidence has now piled so high, that Taib suddenly realises that he can no longer brush aside the questions about his corruption and the squalid wealth of his family, both in Sarawak and abroad.
With the issue now making headlines in Malaysia and reaching the international news, even the controlled pressmen of Sarawak would not be able to avoid asking questions about it. And, by cancelling the press conference, it seems clear that Taib has no idea how to answer them.
It is a sign of fatal weakness at the heart of his regime that Taib no longers dares to face the press.
Lost for answers!

People should remember that Taib has already been suffering under siege in the State Assembly.
He may have been able to rig the recent election to produce his customary 2/3 majority of seats yet again, but even after all the bribery and manipulation 45% of voters still voted against him and there now is a strong body of PR opposition YBs, who are fearlessly giving him a far tougher time than before.
So how has he dealt with their outraged questions about corruption and cronyism? How has he met their complaints about lands and contracts being handed out to his unqualified children and siblings, instead of being tendered properly for the benefit of the people of Sarawak?
It turns out he has been reduced to having to switch off their microphones, rub out their statements from the Hansard record and even to throwing these individuals with their rightful concerns physically out of the DUN building!
The only reason for such a farcical reaction has to be that he finds such questions impossible to answer, so he needs to pretend that they haven’t been asked.
In exactly the same way, now that it is the turn of the press to ask the same set of questions, he has been forced to lock the doors and shut them out!
The questions that Taib is frightened of being asked
So, what are the questions that any decent set of journalists would have put to Taib, if he had agreed to open the door? We suggest the following top five:
“Chief Minister, how do you explain the US$1.5 billion dollars worth of assets that have been acquired by members of your immediate family through just 14 of the more than 400 companies that they own?”
“Chief Minister, you claimed that you and your family ‘do no business in Sarawak to avoid being hounded by accusations that you have used your influence to enrich yourself’. So how do you explain the over 300 companies in Sarawak that you and your family own shares in?”
“Chief Minister, your dead wife is the largest single shareholder of Sarawak’s largest single company, CMS. Yet she passed away two years ago. So who is her beneficiary?”
“Chief Minister, why do you keep handing out all the most valuable state lands and state contracts to members of your own family in secret deals, instead of putting them out to open tender?”
“Chief Minister, given that dual citizenship is illegal, is your eldest daughter, Jamilah, Malaysian (as it says on the records of the 87 Sarawak companies in which she holds shares) or is she Canadian, as admitted by her husband Sean Murray?”
There are, of course, numerous other questions that eager journalists, given half a chance might unleash on the Chief Minister and we suggest that contributors to our comments column put theirs forward too. These are also questions that should rightly be asked by the Malaysian police force, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and, of course, Taib’s political colleagues and the Prime Minister of Malaysia!

Now that Taib is no longer so interested in talking to the press it is going to give them a bit of a challenge. After all, for the past decades Sarawak newspapers have relied for every page on tedious stories recording the aging Taib and his colleagues’ daily movements, without question or criticism.
The Borneo Post is largely owned by his timber crony Henry Lau of KTS and the Sarawak Tribune is half-owned by his cousin Hamed Sepawi and edited by his own daughter Hannifah Taib. Their fawning praise has, unsurprinsingly, never faltered.
However, if the Chief Minister is no longer going to provide them with a constant stream of ‘stories’ about his comings and goings and lhis atest theories on ‘progress and development’, what can we suggest for them to write about instead?
Again, we would be happy to see suggestions in our comments column. However, we think that the journalists of Kuching should roll up their trouser legs and get out on the roads to examine some of Sarawak’s devastated interior and visit some of Sarawak’s disinherited tribes?

They could consider why the majority of the population no longer have clean rivers and fish to provide food and water. They could cover the landgrab scandal. They could demonstrate the effects of erosion. They could look at the lamentable health problems of the population and ask how corruption has interfered with proper medical care.
They could look at schooling and why it still fails so many native Dayaks? Why promised roads are not being delivered? They could document the gangster attacks on behalf of loggers and go searching to see what remains of Sarawak’s once fabled biodiversity – its trees and animals.
They could feature the lives and problems of some of the ordinary folk of Sarawak, instead of boring everyone to death with yet more dreary and depressing articles about Abdul Taib Mahmud, the ancient Chief Minster, who dare not step down for fear that his successor might challenge all his ill-gotten gains!

The reality in Sarawak is the larger gains from timber logging go to Taib and his cronies and not for community development projects. Unless this leakage is plugged now, future CMs of Sarawak would do the same.

Why is this commentator 'Dayak love Taib' so glued on Taib winning the last State election as a basis for his ramblings, rantings, generalizations, and repetitions all alluring to his blind allegiance to Taib?
His endless glowing accolades about Taib in the face of adversity is an illustration of a person who like Taib refuses to give straight answers to the real tough questions or issues. Like Taib too, he's a side-tracker, one who ignores the truth for something more palatable and tries hard to justify the unjustifiable. His mind is doing tricks on him, a prisoner of his own mind.
Doesn't he know or refuse to know that the overall popular votes for Taib has been waning by almost half (45%) since the last State election? I've been waiting for the fall of Taib for loooooong time but it never materialize. I still remember the story of He Shen of the China Qin Dynasty, the most corrupted officials in China history and his end.

I'm believe that whoever that's going to seize this damn Taib assets that he stole from all Sarawakian, will be in for a big surprise like Emperor Jiaqing in the future.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) defended its position on Dec 16 with regards to the National Feedlot Center scandal on two fronts: through the issue of a statement and in a press conference given by MACC chief commissioner Abu Kassim Mohamed after the closing ceremony of a MACC program at the Anti-Corruption Academy .
In the statement quoted by Bernama, MACC denied that it had not taken any action. It said that it did scrutinize the complaint from NGOs regarding the abuse of a government loan to purchase luxurious condominiums by National Feedlot Corporation, and found no corruption element, and hence passed the case to the police.

SERIAN: The government is keen to develop a dual carriage way between Kuching and Miri to provide easy access between the two cities.
In saying that this was ideal as it would cut down driving time from 12 hours to seven, Infrastructure Development and Communication Minister Dato Sri Micheal Manyin Jawong, however, said the government did not have sufficient funds to carry out the project.
“Sarawak is the biggest state in Malaysia and our population is only 2.5 million and very scattered. We cannot follow what is being implemented in Peninsular Malaysia,” he told reporters after officiating at the Christmas Road Safety Campaign today.
At the same time, Manyin also said that a lot of villages and longhouses were still not accessible by road, adding that the ministry’s target and priority was to make all these places accessible by 2020.
“Roads are very costly. We cannot just concentrate on the trunk road or the towns. We also want to provide connectivity to all those villages and settlements,” said Manyin, pointing out that this was a tall order for the ministry.
“Public Works Department (JKR) capacity is there but the money is not,” he said.
Nevertheless, he acknowledged that the federal government had given the state a substantial amount of money for roads, including those within the SCORE area.
“Our ministry has submitted a request for RM100 million under the Tenth Malaysia Plan to build overtaking lanes.
“If we get that, I believe accidents on the trunk roads will be very much reduced,” Manyin said, adding that Sarawak does not have enough volume for toll plazas.
On the road safety campaign, Manyin advised motorcyclists to give way to larger vehicles even if they have right of way as they usually bear the brunt of any accident with a car or lorry.
“You may be right, but you may also be dead right,” he said, revealing that around 65 per cent of traffic accidents were caused by human factors.
“As minister, I appeal to people not to drink and drive. You must know your limit,” Manyin said, adding that Gawai was usually accompanied by a drastic increase in the number of accidents.
According to Malaysia Road Safety Department (JKJR), the number of accidents increased from 15,157 during Jan-Nov last year to 15,759 this Jan-Nov.
Meanwhile, accident-related deaths went up from 310 to 330 in the same period.
Earlier on Manyin handed out brochures and goodies to motorists in Serian, and new helmets to motorcyclists as part of JKJR’s regular road safety campaigns.
Also present was JKJR Sarawak deputy director Redzuan Hamdan.

The Petronas deal was concluded with Sabah being forever entitled to 5percent royalty only. What happened to the 20 points and MalaysianConstitution is already known.
It was also reported that the test pilot who examined the wreck of theNomad plane soon perished in another plane crash in Australia,although it is believed that he had already submitted the full reportto the relevant authorities in Malaysia. There were also speculationthat the report was to be made public but nothing has actuallyhappened.

The Tunku arranged a five-day visit to Sarawak in the beginning of July 1966 to smoothe over, and line up additional support for, a coup in the state cabinet that had been pulled off a few weeks earlier with assistance from Kuala Lumpur. Travelling on the flagship of the Royal Malaysian navy, K.D. Hang Tuah, he was accompanied by several of his colleagues in the federal cabinet: Khaw Kai Boh (local Government), Senu Abdul Rahman (Information and Broadcasting), Tan Sri V.T. Sambanthan (Posts, Telecommunications and works), and Sarawak's Abdul Rahman Yakub (Lands and Mines). The Tunku's intention was to overwhelm the populace with the power and prestige of the federal government and to convince everyone in Sarawak of the justifications and merits of the changes that had taken place. Syed Kechik joined the party when the ship anchored at sibu on July 1. he had been following recent news from Sarawak and was aware of the more superficial aspects of problems there. But he was also aware of the fragility of relationships between the Borneo states and Kuala Lumpur and chagrined by the detached confidence with which federal leaders seemed to approach their mission in Sarawak. A number of them assumed that their mere presence would be sufficient to stabilize the situation in Kuala Lumpur's favour. In response to Syed Kechik's questions, they responded only that they were there to patch up some small differences. Rather naive to the realities of East Malaysian politics, he thought, where minor differences were sufficient cause for seccession. When the entourage left by launch for Kapit for a regatta and mass rally organized to demonstrate support for the new state government, the federal government, and Malaysia itself, Syed Kechik searched out a number of state leaders, including Thomas Kana, the Pesaka Secretary-General and a member of Parliament. On the four-hour trip up the Rejang, he plied them with questions to find out what really had been going on. In early june, some members of the Council Negeri, Sarawak's legislative assembly, had moved to displace Datuk Stephen Kalong Ningkan as Chief Minister. ningkan's Sarawak National party (SNAP) was a component of the Sarawak Alliance, in partnership with Barisan Rakyat Jati Sarawak (Barjasa), Party Pesaka Anak Sarawak (Pesaka), Party Negara Sarawak (PANAS) and the Sarawak Chinese Association (SCA), but Pesaka and Barjasa were increaisngly disagreeing with Ningkan's stance on a number of key issues and were clearly dissatisfied with his style. Having served as Chief Minister since his days before independence, Ningkan had already been the focus of one cabinet crisis in May 1965, precipitated by his introduction of some unpopular land bills. With confrontation then at its peak, it was necessary to seek a compromise, and there resulted only a shuffling of cabinet portfolios with Ningkan's retaining the Chief Ministership.
MALAYAN GUN BOAT DIPLOMACY
The power struggle between SNAP on one hand and Pesaka anbd Barjasa on the other remained unsolved, however, and this was a constant source of friction in the Sarawak Alliance. Ningkan had also become unacceptable toi the federal government in a manner which had many parallels with the situation in Sabah some months before. he and his colleagues were closely allied with expatriate officers, and Kuala lumpur found that in many of its dealings with Sarawak, it was negotiating with expartriates, not Malaysians. ningkan was also sympathetic towards Singapore, and after Singapore eparation, the issue of states' rights again came to the fore. Ningkan disliked the intervention of Kala Lumpur in Sarawak's affairs and was suspicious of any state politician who seemed to be spending undue time in the federal capital. His personal outrages were also becoming excessive, much to the embarassment of all those who were touched. At public gatherings, he had accosted members of Parliament and the Council Negeri with threats of bodily harm, detention, and deportattion, with assertions of th epower of his wealth and manliness and with promises to take Sarwak out of Malaysia if Kuala Lumpur did not abide with his views. Like stephens, he had been given a free hand by the Tunku to govern as he saw fit, but when this treatened the unity of the nation, he had to be reined in. and with the Indonesian Confrontation drawing to a close, the need for apparently cordial relations between state and federal governments was superceded by the need to subordinate idiosyncratic state interests to federal imperatives. In early June, Sarawak leaders unhappy with Ningkan's rule had garnered the signatures of 21 of the 32 Sarawak Alliance members in the Council Negeri to a statement that Ningkan no longer held their confidence and that they wanted him to step down as Chief Minister. getting wind of this, Ningkan dismissed Taib Mahmud, one of the instigators, from his post as Minister of Communications and Works in the state cabinet on June 12. the following day, three other dissent state ministers resigned, knowing their fate to be sealed, and all 21 signatories flew off to Kuala lumpur. After consulting with National Alliance leaders, the disaffected Council Negeri members cabled Kuching, asking ningkan for his resignation and informing him they would not attend the meeting of the Council Negeri scheduled for June 14. Although it may have seemed obvious for them to have sat at this meeting and called for a vote of no confidence, the coup leaders wanted the showdown outside the Council Negeri. There were two reasons for this. First, there was some uncertainty as to whether their 21 votes were sufficent to bring Ningkan down. The Council Negeri had 42 members- including 36 elected,three appointed,a dn three ex officio members – plus the Speaker. The elected and appointed seats were then allocated as follows: of the Sarawak Alliance seats, Pesaka held 15, barjasa five, SCA three, SNAP six, and PANAS three; of the opposition seats, SUPP held five, Machia one, and there was one independent. Supporting the anti-Ningkan move were the 20 Pesaka and Barjasa members and one PANAS member.

By now, we should have another road running parallel to the Pan Borneo Highway except that this road should run in the interior of Sarawak all the way from Kuching to Limbang and there should be at least another 5 to 10 roads running from our border with Indonesia all the way to the South China Sea coast. And, by now, we should be able to drive all the way from Kuching to Kapit and along the way we should be able to see a lot more modern longhouses or bungalow units owned by Dayak farmers with one or two cars in the compound with electricity and piped water and being hooked up to a satellite dish.
We should also be able to see a lot more schools nearby longhouses or Dayak communities surrounded by farmlands with Sarawak being the ricebowl of the country as well as the main agricultural producer being the main income driver of the Dayak communities. Where the new roads intersect, new communities should spring up being driven by the Government setting up new hospitals, schools, fire brigades, local governments, water boards, electricity boards, federal government offices such as the passport office, police stations to oversee law and order, social welfare offices to look after the poor etc providing alternative and professional employment opportunities to the rural Dayak communities while at the same time making it easy for the Dayaks to register any new born, send their children to school, seek medical help, make new passports, travel to other parts of the country by land and most importantly being able to transport their produce to the markets around the country – this being their main source of income – and lowering their overall costs of living. At the same time, we should not forget how the existence of road connections would surely have saved some lives too – for those who died because they arrived at hospitals too late because of the lack of road transport and Government induced infrastructures such as hospitals and fire brigades. And these new communities should be able to prevent the migration of Dayak youths from the rural farmlands to the established towns and cities resulting in the developments of Dayak towns and Cities in rural Sarawak.
These are some of the things / developments that should have happened over the last 35 to 40 years. Did we see any of these? Wouldn't your blood boils when you know so much could have been done and yet was not done only aggravating the sufferings of our own people?
All the money that's missing from the Sarawak Treasury could have been for the developments that i have mentioned above. And this would have been a win-win-win situation for all – for the Government, the increased incomes of the Dayaks will result in higher tax receipts for the Government; for people, higher income levels, for the Business community, better business as the people now have higher disposable incomes. Alas, none was forthcoming because of some selfish people. And, you are so forgiving?
It seem everybody are blaming the Dayak Love Taib and give hin the 2/3 majority. The Dayak are not really in love with Taib, how about the Malay and Melanau, whose area were not even touch by the opposition – PAS. So do have a look at it now. Is it the Dayak or the Malay/Melanau who really support and suck Taib Ball in every election since tome immemorial. Get your fact right, guys.
