Sinking Ship

Like the proverbial rats jumping overboard the exodus from UMNO continues to grow. Now a Kelantan MP (who actually beat his PAS opponent in GE 14) follows suit. It can only be a matter of time before the remaining rump of Zahadists dive over the rail of the good ship UMNO.

No one should be surprised by all this. Once the criminal nature of the UMNO leadership became public knowledge and, more importantly, attained public acceptance this unseemly rush for the rail became inevitable.

It is certainly time for the Registrar of Societies to take official notice of all these developments and review UMNO’s registration.

More significantly there should be consideration of what to do when an MP deserts the party under whose banner he was elected. To deal with “frogs”. A defecting MP displays nothing more than his personal view and it may well be healthier to change the law so that in such instances he loses his seat and a bye election has to be held to determine what his constituents think. They put him there and perhaps they should have a say in who now represents them?

Last, but not least, what do UMNO’s GE14 allies PAS have to say about all this? Is there a religious aspect as well as a political one to be considered? Maybe PAS leader Awang Hadi will feel impelled to comment publicly?
